Philippians 4:11-13 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
I was recently struggling with the burden of seeing our savings account dwindle as we experienced several major financial losses. Medical bills, car repairs and life situations sucking out what we had worked hard to save. Nothing is more fun than tons of bills during the Holidays. As I was sitting and talking to God about this, I was aware of the broken place my heart was in. My mind was drawn to the verse above. As I read and thought about Paul’s exhortation and example of contentment, a wonderful peace settled over my soul.
Paul learned contentment. It was not a natural state of life. It takes choice, thought and grace from heaven to live this supernatural life in a broken world. Paul says that he has “learned the secret of being content.” He then informs us that this secret is found in Christ. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
As I considered Paul, I realized that I would never find peace by trying to have enough money saved. Stuff can’t protect me. Only Jesus can protect me. There will always be bills, sickness and life sucking situations. But…Jesus is my true source of security and peace. “My God shall supply all my needs according to his riches and glory.” I can be content, at peace and satisfied by putting my gaze and focus on Him, knowing that He is for me. He can give me rest and contentment in any situation. I want to leave you today with this verse from Hebrews. It is a great place to put your heart and mind today, so, you too can learn to be content. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all.
Hebrews 13:5-6 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
