John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
In this verse we see Jesus explain how the presence of God, in His Word, brings us life. Jesus had just taught one of the most offensive sermons He would ever preach. He is prophesying the communion meal, talking about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. But He did not bother to explain to the crowd his spiritual metaphor. So, many were so offended by the image of eating His flesh and drinking His blood that they left Him. Jesus goes on to explain the image to the disciples who stayed. These words are Spirit and Life.
There are two major lessons to learn in this verse. First, it is the life of God manifest in Jesus that truly feeds us. Second, Jesus, or the Father, will gladly offend our thinking to challenge us to realize what is truly important. The flesh, the stuff of this life, has no life in it. What we need is life with God! Relationship with God, the love of God, is our focus in this life. The Word of God is alive and leads into that relationship. Jesus’ words are His presence. Our Father uses the journey to form us.
Today, pray for this awareness to be yours. Seek relationship with God through His Word. The trials of this life will reveal to you the things you are truly pursuing. Put them in their proper place and seek to grow in love with Jesus above all else. Open up God’s Word and seek the life of God in relationship with Christ.
