John 5:19-20 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
These amazing words of Jesus come at a time when the Pharisees were challenging Him for His activities, healings, on the Sabbath day. This was highly offensive to their religious customs and legal interpretations of the covenant. Jesus explains his offensive works by explaining to them how He operates. He can only do what He sees the Father doing! Wow, I guess that explains why Jesus was always talking to His Father in prayer. Hours of prayers, nights of prayer, constant relationship in prayer. Remember, Jesus was wholly man, and wholly God. He was acting in a very specific way as the model, and first born, of a new Kingdom and family. Jesus’ principle is a primary one for all of us. We, His brothers and sisters, are to act just like He did. The basis for our lives and work here on earth is doing what we see the Father doing out of a deep relationship with God.
Thank you Lord so much for the great grace you pour onto us slow learners. Please Lord, help us keep the primary goal in mind always. I want to be a man who is seeking relationship with God through prayer and the Word. I want to be a man who is making it his life goal to live doing what I see the Father doing. Our Father will pour out much grace on me, and anyone who lets himself, herself, after this goal.
Father, pour out Your grace on us, we want to live a life of relationship and followership; a life doing what we see you doing. That is my goal. Is it yours?
