John 15:12-15 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
Jesus paints a beautiful picture here of the truth of His love for us and how He wants to form our love for Him and one another. Jesus paid the ultimate price to wash away any barriers between us. He died on the cross, taking the judgement of God that each of us should bear; taking that judgement for us. We are now able to come to our Father God by the love of His son which has completely washed us of our sin and brokenness. This love is now a model for us!
Not only are we radically saved from our sin, but, we are also able to have a true friendship with God and one another. Our Father and our Lord Jesus want to partner with us in friendship. They want us to love those around us in the same way we have been loved. We are the joyful children of God, friends of the King who can pour out this love and joy on all humanity. Our Master’s life in us is to love as we have been loved. We are the friends of God called to love those around us in the same ways He has loved us. Who can you die for today?
